Education and Early Career
Dr. John Lukas began his journey in the field of zoology by obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, followed by a Master’s and Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Florida. His passion for conservation led him to work with various organizations, such as the Florida Museum of Natural History and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
A Focus on African Wildlife
Dr. Lukas’s work has primarily revolved around the conservation of African wildlife, with a particular emphasis on okapis and their habitats. He co-founded the Okapi Conservation Project in 1987, which aims to protect the okapi species, a rare and elusive forest giraffe found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Establishment of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve
One of Dr. Lukas’s most significant accomplishments is the establishment of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve in 1992. Spanning over 13,700 square kilometers, the reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to numerous endangered species, including forest elephants, leopards, and, of course, okapis.
