Education and Early Career
Dr. Rudi van Aarde completed his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in Zoology at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. During his studies, he developed a fascination with elephants, which led him to focus his research on understanding their behavior, ecology, and conservation.
Founder of the Conservation Ecology Research Unit (CERU)
In 2005, Dr. van Aarde founded the Conservation Ecology Research Unit (CERU) at the University of Pretoria. CERU focuses on interdisciplinary research aimed at understanding and conserving biodiversity. Under Dr. van Aarde’s leadership, the research unit has grown to include over 100 researchers and students, working on projects related to a wide range of species, including elephants, rhinos, and birds.
Elephant Conservation Pioneer
Dr. van Aarde is recognized worldwide for his groundbreaking research on elephant populations, particularly in Africa. He has led several important initiatives aimed at understanding and mitigating the impact of human activities on elephants.
